This July 4th, I Saw Something Important — And Cannabis Helped Me See It

Every summer, like clockwork, I reconnect with family and friends I don’t get to see nearly enough. Some are aging gracefully — laughing more, moving better, staying sharp. Others, though, feel like they’re fading. Not physically, necessarily, but emotionally. And the biggest difference I notice? Social connection.

The ones who stay social — who show up to barbecues, text their old college friends, host card nights or game nights — seem to age in a completely different way. There’s more energy in their lives. More curiosity. More joy. Meanwhile, those who stay isolated, even if they’re “fine,” seem to have less of everything. Less spark. Less engagement. Less wellness overall.

Connection Is a Lifeline — Especially As We Get Older

Social connection is more than just a feel-good bonus. Study after study confirms that strong social ties are critical to aging well. They improve mental health, reduce the risk of dementia, lower stress, and even help you live longer. And yet, as we get older, it gets harder to maintain — let alone build — new relationships.

That’s where cannabis can come in. Over the holiday weekend, I saw it firsthand.

Cannabis Is a Bridge — Not a Crutch

At our July 4th gathering, a few family members who hadn’t hung out in years ended up bonding over a joint. Nothing wild. Just a small moment of curiosity and shared experience. For some, it was a little nostalgic — “remember that one time back in the 70s?” For others, it was something new and slightly out of their comfort zone. But it brought them together. It sparked stories. It softened old edges. And more than that, it created an opening for connection that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.

New Rituals, New People, New Perspectives

Cannabis doesn’t just revive old friendships — it can also help you build new ones. In the right setting, it breaks down barriers. It replaces awkward small talk with authentic conversation. It invites reflection, curiosity, and openness. Used intentionally and responsibly, it’s a powerful tool for connection, especially as we age out of the more socially chaotic phases of life.

Whether it's a shared ritual like rolling a joint, trying out a new pipe, or just sitting around and talking while you pass something around, cannabis has a unique ability to bring people into the present moment — together. And that might be one of the most valuable things we have.
